Apprenticeships Construction

Employer research recently carried out by the CITB highlighted a demand for skilled Site Operatives in the Construction Industry. Currently, there is not a nationally, industry recognised career path or qualification for the general Construction Site Operative. The industry has changed dramatically over the past 20+ years, health and safety and the environment (to name just two factors) have influenced and changed the culture on all construction sites in the UK, and with it the importance and value of the Site Operative who is now a part of any well-managed site.

Wakefield College is currently offering employers the chance to trial their NEW Construction Site Operative course which is due to start this September. The training will take place over 14 weeks on day release starting on Friday 11 June and is completely FREE!

The course will develop real skills and training for the Construction Site providing existing employees with proper recognition of their skills which will increase their career opportunities, as well as providing them with additional competency in a range of subjects.

The course, which will be available to all from September whether employed or seeking employment in the construction industry, will cover subjects such as:

  • Workplace health, safety, and welfare legislation requirements (including electrical, chemical, biological, noise, slip and trip, and manual handling hazards).
  • Safe working at heights.
  • Operation of powered tools such as disc cutters and compaction plates.
  • Groundworks excavation and preparation.
  • Preparation and laying of paving and brickwork.
  • Communication and teamwork.
  • Work ethic, attitude and discipline.
  • Basic digital skills.
  • CSCS Green Card preparation and test.

There are a limited number of places on this trial, but there is no limit to the number of people you can send, provided there are spaces available.

If you wish to book a place(s) for your employee(s) or would like further information on the course starting in September, please send an email to d.lee@wakefield.ac.uk
