Student Recognition

The exceptional achievements of two students from Wakefield College were celebrated yesterday as they were awarded prestigious BTEC awards. Azrah Khan, was awarded the bronze BTEC award for the Business and Enterprise Student of the Year category and Mateusz Sowinski, claimed the silver award for BTEC Science Student of the Year.

Both students hard work and dedication were celebrated at the tenth anniversary of Pearson’s annual BTEC Awards hosted online on 25 June 2020 at 2pm.

Cindy Rampersaud, Senior Vice President BTEC and Apprenticeship, said: “This year I’ve been over-whelmed by the quality of BTEC Award nominations we received and I am delighted to celebrate this year’s winners and the achievements of all learners who will be awarded a BTEC this year. Over the past few weeks and months, we’ve seen how the current pandemic has highlighted the critical role of key workers and individuals who are likely to have followed a vocational educational pathway such as BTEC.”

The 2020 BTEC Awards comprised of 17 categories and was hosted by presenter of the United Stand, YouTube influencer and BTEC Ambassador, Flex, with awards presented by Double Olympic Gold medallist Max Whitlock as well as actress and former BTEC Drama student at The BRIT School, Kellie Shirley. The expert panel of judges made up of Pearson’s senior leadership team, journalists and external experts, carefully considered the nominees before deciding on the winners.

Commenting on Azrah’s achievements, Lynne Johnson, Azrah’s Business Lecturer said “I was Azrah’s tutor for her final year in college. I found her to be one of the most hard-working students of her year group. She was eager to achieve the best she possibly could and would always listen to advice and take on board any suggestions for improvement to her work. She was an extremely diligent young lady.”

A Level Curriculum Development Manager, Amy Westwood said “The decision to nominate Mateusz was unanimous amongst all Science staff. To quote one teacher 'It just HAS to be Mateusz'. He is an outstanding student and individual. He will go extremely far in whatever he chooses to do with his life. Mateusz is a calm and mature student who has consistently achieved outstanding grades through his hard work and perseverance. He is an excellent role model to other students in his group. From his first day at college he has been focused on achieving the grades needed for his university degree, Medicinal Chemistry, and has completed a large amount of extracurricular reading to ensure he gains the highest marks possible on homework, exams and assignments. A thoroughly deserved winner.”
