WDH’s Construction Team works with Wakefield College to provide hands on learning for students

Wakefield College Construction students on Work Placement at WDH

 

WDH’s Construction Team is working in partnership with Wakefield College to provide work experience for their construction students to improve Monkhill in Pontefract.

Students began by spending time with WDH’s Electrical Team, learning about repairs, before the scheme expanded to include the Construction Team and their upcoming projects.

The scheme at Monkhill will see 143 properties benefit from new off street parking, new drainage systems, access paths around the properties, new boundary fencing and new turf.

The two week rolling placements allow students to gain valuable hands on experience on a working construction site while also benefiting WDH tradespeople who get experience as mentors, passing on their experience and investing in young people.

During their time on site, the students learn vital health and safety skills, are allocated a mentor and gain priceless experience.

David Ainsworth, WDH’s Construction Project Manager, said: “We are very happy with how the work experience project is going. We are working closely with Wakefield College to provide additional support for alternative trades students on our upcoming new build construction projects across the district. The project is providing a great opportunity for members of the team to have a go at mentoring and to pass on their skills and years of experience in the workplace.”

Debbie Lee, Work Placement Officer for Construction from Wakefield College, said: “The collaboration between WDH and Wakefield College has been hugely successful. Students have gained so much experience working alongside qualified tradespeople; it can be seen when they come back into college in their attitude and approach towards the tasks they complete in the workshop. The feedback from the students has been extremely positive in how they have been accepted onto the sites and mentored in their roles.  We are very grateful for the opportunities that the students have been offered and look forward to a continuing strong relationship with WDH.”
