Wakefield College Head Football coach, Ben Severn was recently selected to be part of the English Colleges National team coaching squad for a prestigious international tournament in Rome, Italy.

Severn has been involved in the coaching team for the last 18 months and helped build a team of the best college players in the country that would compete in a high-quality international tournament against other full national squads including Malta, Kosovo, Italy, Greece, Wales and Moldova.

The build-up to the week involved trials earlier on in the year, a training camp at St Georges Park and a friendly against Australia.

Involvement with the national team is widely seen as the pinnacle in UK college football and Wakefield College was proud to have a member of staff recognised for his abilities and shows the quality of staff the College have invested in to provide students with the best possible opportunities and experience.

Commenting on his involvement, Ben Severn said: “My job, as well as coaching the squad, is to scout and find the best players in Yorkshire and the north of England. It’s a great opportunity for myself and other local players. This region has some great talent but due to the enormity of the process and quality of the squad, it can be difficult finding the best players.  As my role grows with Wakefield Colleges Football Development Programme, hopefully, we can get a few Wakefield College students representing the national team over the next few years.

"I’ve learnt a lot in the last 18 months from ex-professionals and top quality coaches, all which then gets filtered back to the college students to enhance their experience.”

Whilst England did not win the tournament, they were praised for their great brand of football.
