Engineering Work Placements

Jamie Pickersgill, Abdul Ali, Connor Walton and Gary Wright

Two Level 2 Fabrication and Welding students have successfully gained apprenticeships with MD Engineering Solutions Ltd, based at Whitwood Castleford. MD Engineers provide engineering solutions to the brewing, distilling and process industries and after successful work placements, they have offered Abdulahi Ali and Connor Walton full time apprenticeships, with an immediate start.

Abdulahi said, “The tutors are really helpful and supportive, I wouldn’t have got the apprenticeship without the work placement opportunity to show the company my hard work ethic and knowledge.”

In November, the company met with Gary Wright, Fabrication and Welding tutor, Marc Sharratt, College Assessor for Engineering and Jamie Pickersgill, Work Placement Officer to discuss apprenticeship opportunities with the college. MD Engineering Solutions Ltd agreed for students to undertake a 4-day work experience placement, with a potential apprenticeship outcome for one student initially. MD Engineering Solutions Ltd were unable to successfully recruit their own apprentices and working with Wakefield College appealed to them so College could identify students with strong capabilities to go work in their workshops.

Abdul and Connor were involved in the assembly of a high-pressure barrel cleaning system that MD Engineers have developed and were assembling to ship to a client in the USA. As a work placement the students were involved with the assembly process, using hand tools, pillar drills, cutting with band saws, developing many skills they have learnt on their Fabrication and Welding course.

Connor said, “College was really helpful putting me into the work placement, giving me the opportunity to meet new people, work in a team, experience a real-life workshop environment and gain an apprenticeship at the end of it, which I am really happy about.”

All involved are really pleased with their efforts and achievements and they have both now been enrolled onto Level 2 Performing Engineering Operations – Fabrication and Welding Apprenticeships.
