After a successful year as part of the SSE Wildcats Football Centre project pilot, Wakefield College are now delighted to be working in partnership with local primary schools adding two new centres at Martin Frobisher Infant School, Normanton All Saints Infant School, in addition to their existing centre at Lightwaves Leisure Centre.

SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Centres from The FA will provide girls from Wakefield aged 5-11 with regular opportunities to play football. The initiative offers organised sessions in a fun and engaging environment created exclusively for girls. The initiative is in line with The FA’s Gameplan for Growth, with the target of doubling girls’ participation in the sport by 2020.

There has been a substantial growth in the profile of Women’s Football over the past couple of years, following on from the successes of the England Women’s national team (Lionesses) and the professionalisation of the top tiers of club football.

As an FA College Grassroots Hub, Wakefield College are committed to providing the young people of Wakefield, regardless of age or ability, with more playing opportunities, especially the girls.

For girls aged 11-16 Wakefield College are delighted to announce that they are working in partnership with the West Riding County FA to run one only four Player Development Centres (PDC) across the County. Ran by qualified and experienced coaches, the PDC is the next step on the player pathway from grassroots football and has close links to the England talent pathway. The 16-week programme is themed around the England DNA and will support the girls in their individual development as a player.
