A partnership with Torque and Wakefield College’s ‘Get SET’ programme has been very successful, the scheme is dedicated to enabling students with learning difficulties and disabilities to gain real employment experience with businesses. Get SET uses a technique called job carving, which means that the students focus on one or two aspects of the job and learns how to do these well. Students are supported in their placement by a job coach who ensures that they are fully trained to undertake their role effectively.

Danielle Glover, 20 and Jade Hodson, 18, joined the Torque team for one day a week, working in the Processing Department. After a hugely successful start, the students’ hours have been increased to two days a week.

Torque is an end-to-end supply chain logistics operator. For over 25 years, they have been supporting some of the UK’s biggest brands in fashion and retail. With sites across, Yorkshire, Lancashire and London, they strongly believe in the Torque community and providing support for that community.

Since joining in November the new recruits have gone from strength to strength honing their skills and quickly becoming integral members of the team. Jade and Danielle are responsible for the processing of returns whilst working at Torque. They must quality check each item, ensuring that the size is correct and the condition is to a high standard. The girls will then fold and repackage items ready for resale. Jade Hodson said, "I really enjoy being at Torque, I like learning new things and getting to push myself every week to meet my targets. I have grown as a person and really feel like part of the team."

The scheme has certainly proved successful, Rachel Staszewsky, Wakefield College’s Assistant Job Coach at Get SET said, “Our mission at Wakefield College is to transform lives through learning by enabling young people to fulfil their potential and Torque has truly enabled my students to develop their independence skills and gain invaluable experience. This opportunity has seen the girls make outstanding progress personally and professionally.”

Danielle said, “I love seeing how many items I have refurbished at the end of my shift. I am really proud of how far I have come.”

With the programme proving so successful Torque is now looking at how they can implement similar schemes at their other sites across the country.
