Children from across the district descended onto Wakefield recently taking part in a variety of activities marking the first ever Wakefield Children’s University Cultural Trail. The College teamed up with a number of Learning Destinations for the activities including Yorkshire Sculpture Park, National Coal Mining Museum, Theatre Royal Wakefield, Wakefield Castles & Museums, Wakefield Cathedral, The Hepworth Wakefield and Wakefield Libraries.

Pupils tried out a range of activities including heritage walks, drawing, and science experiments. Visitors to the Theatre Royal were treated to musicals featuring whistle-stop tour of Wicked, Billy Elliot, Matilda, West Side Story, Les Misérables, and Cats.

Pupil Lottie Kilburn-Denny said: "I loved all the things I did on the Culture Trail, I really enjoyed it and hope to do it again when I'm older."

Cherene Marshall, mum to 6 year old Arley, said: “I would say it’s been a fantastic learning experience and an encouragement to do things as a family. Thanks to the Cultural Trail we have had fantastic holiday.”

Kayleigh Moore, Wakefield Children’s University Coordinator added: “The Children’s University is all about exciting learning experiences outside of school hours. The Cultural Trail we created in partnership with seven of our local Learning Destinations fits in perfectly with this ethos.

“All the activities available were engaging for children of all ages and encouraged them to be creative, explore new surroundings and take part in something they might not have done otherwise. We’re receiving the booklets back now, full of photos, reports, drawings and models. It’s great to see what an impact this event has had on our local children and we can’t wait to do it again next year.”
